To supply us with a credit card terminal to take card payments?
We have been turned down by Streamline because of the business we are in.
What is web based payment?
Do we need to open a merchant account with a lender first?

Services such as paypal allow you to receive interenet payments by clients using credit cards and you do not need to register with the credit card company

You could also have a look at WorldPay (http://www.worldpay.co.uk/) or Nochex (http://www.nochex.co.uk/)

I used to use the paypal system for taking card payments offline. I am sure that I got it free for several months. I stopped using it in the end as there wasn't the demand for offline payments, most of my customers preferred to pay by paypal online. It was a lot cheaper to set up I believe than WorldPay which is why I opted for it.

You could try Protx who charge a set fee for up to 1000 transactions
