The enormous growth of broadband and mobile broadband has placed the internet as the next platform for radio and will very shortly supersede DAB (digital stations). One station at the forefront of the changing radio landscape is newly launched Oxygen Radio www.oxygenradio.co.uk (http://www.oxygenradio.co.uk/). With its official debut this week the station is leading the field and making the first important steps to change the way millions of us will listen to the radio in the future.
Oxygen Radio promises listeners a better quality of sound, fewer advertisements and a bigger helping of the nation's favourite chart music. Accessed by the internet the UK-wide station is promoting itself as the country's new 'at work radio station'.
Oxygen will offer its audience a number of important listening improvements over many other radio stations and with Internet radio being firmly recognised as the “new generation” of radio the new station will provide listeners with a stream that is of better quality than most digital stations. As a station that can be heard via the internet listeners can take advantage of the high speed internet now widely available on mobile phones and so can receive Oxygen anywhere. In addition Wi-Fi radios mean you no longer have to have your computer switched on to listen.
Primarily aimed at the 20 – 35 year old listener Oxygen's playlist is packed full of fresh hits from the UK's favourite chart artists such as Akon, Lily Allen, The Killers, Beyonce, Take That and The Saturdays. With music being key to the stations appeal Oxygen will play around 75% less adverts than most commercial radio stations allowing listeners to enjoy much more of their favourite music. There will also be a news bulletin every hour for listeners to keep in touch with what's happening at home and abroad.
The station'sthree key presenters are Chris Murton, Matt Cadman and Gavin Harris. Collectively they bring with them to Oxygen a wealth of radio presenting experience having worked for some of the most successful local radio stations - BBC's Radio 4 and 5, and the UK's largest commercial radio group at 95.8 Capital FM.
Oxygen will offer advertisers a number of key advantages over traditional commercial radio. Free from the restrictions of the Ofcom rules which regulate FM, AM and DAB radio stations Oxygen is able to allow its presenters to talk about and endorse products and services on air. Advertisers will also be able to take advantage of the station's 'pay per listener' style rate card which operates very much along the same lines as Google's 'pay per click'.
Oxygen will feature its 'Club Oxygen' show on a Friday and Saturday night as well as chilled music every weekday night from 10pm in the form of the station's 'Relax Nation' slot.
Providing listeners with a fresh music mix, entertaining presenters and a great quality of sound Oxygen Radio looks set to firmly establish itself as the workplace's favourite new radio station.
