View Full Version : Anyone used Paypal Web payments Pro?

I'm looking at introducing a direct merchant facility to my website in addition to standard Paypal and Google Checkout. I have a few questions which I'd like some feedback on:

First, do direct credit card payments make a substantial difference to sales? I would have thought customers would prefer the security of Paypal/GoogleCheckout and not handing out their credit card numbers to any old Joe.

Another point, am I opening myself up to greater fraud with a direct merchant facility?

And lastly, anyone have any experience of Paypal's Web Payments Pro?

Cheers. :)

You are responsable for the security between your site and the payment gateway. When people pay on Protx, Nochex and Paypal website, they (payment gateway) are responsible for the security.

Still, you will be responsible if someone use the credit card of someone else fraudulently to buy a product you ship to him until the fraudulent person is found even if they paid on Protx, Nochex, or any other payment gateway.

What's the difference with PayPal Pro? Is it just integration? :)

Paypal Pro is a merchant account - exactly the same as protx/streamline etc, but it's a lot easier to open an account. It's also quite easy to integrate. It is more expensive though.

The advantage of a merchant account is that the card payment will have your company name on it - not paypal. I'm one of those who still does not think using "Paypal" shows a very professional image.

I use it with the "virtual terminal" addon, which lets us take payments over the phone.

It's very surprising how easily people give out their card details, it's frightening to think what a crook could do with them & it made me understand why a merchant account is not that easy to get!

The one complaint I have with it is that the funds go into a normal paypal account & it takes at least a week to transfer them to a "normal" bank account.

We have just added the Pay Pal option, simply because it can be funded from a bank accoutn rather than the customer having to have a debit card - surprisingly thee are millions out there without debit card accounts!

I ddn't know about PayPal Pro, however to be fair stayed away from PayPal sinply because I didn't view it as professional - anyoe can have one, no checks, no tradinghistory and I personally associated it with sloppy/suspect sellers on Ebay etc; wrong in this day and age, but you live and learn.

I actually detest PayPal - their costs for merchants are astronomical and if there were another way to provide this no debit card payment type without the killer costs, I would leave PayPal immediately - if not sooner!

If you sell more than £1500/month you can apply for the merchant rate. They don't tell you that too much but you can find out if you look carefully.

Anyone know where I can find the application for for merchant rate? The website sends me around in circles.

To apply for what we call the Merchant Rate follow these steps:

Log in to your PayPal account at www.paypal.co.uk (http://www.paypal.co.uk/)
Select ‘Fees’ at the bottom of the page
Click any of the links which read ‘1.4% to 3.4% + £0.20 GBP’
Go to the ‘How is Eligibility for the Merchant Rates determined?’ section and click the ‘merchant rate criteria’ link
Click 'apply now' at the bottom of the page
Fill out the Merchant Rate application form
Check the box to indicate that you have read and agree to the User Agreement
Click 'Submit'

You are supposed to have received a confirmation email after submitting. They will process your application and come back to you with an answer as soon as they reached a decision.

I'm planning on using it as my standard credit / debit card payment option as well as the normal everyday PayPal payment option. Keeps everything nice and simple under one account.

I used paypal pro two years ago but we had a major problem, in that it wouldn't accept debit cards. They were hopeless to solve the problem.
The fees are really anyway so I wouldn't advise it.
I take cards through protx, also offer standard paypal.
I believe googlecheckout have cheap rates but I don't use them so not sure.

We use Paypal Pro and generally have no problems apart from AMEX cards.
Lots of customers try to purchase costumes from us using American Express cards but the transactions get declined.
We have found their phone support to be excellent.

I believe you can take AMEX if you pay an additional fee.

The alternative to paypal pro is protx/streamline. Streamline waive the £20 monthly fee for FSB members, making it quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks graemepirie,

I'll have to contact Paypal again last time we enquired they just said they had no contract in the UK for AMEX cards.
