Greetings everybody!

I’ve been having this bizarre idea of starting my own green power company! Sounds Interesting…? Please Read on… Sounds stupid...Do read on!

I am from Sri Lanka, the country with the highest electricity cost in Asia. The average cost per Industrial Unit is around 10 US Cents or more. Due to this high electricity cost, Many small and medium scale entrepreneurs have capitalized on the situation and started their power companies.

There are countless examples for how wind, Hydro, Dendro and petroleum based power plants have succeeded. With the demand exceeding the supply by many times, there is much potential in the electricity business so I’m thinking of starting my own fuel wood (Dendro) power plant.

Very briefly, a Dendro power plant works by converting wood to a combustible gas which is fed to a internal combustion engine to generate [FONT='Arial','sans-serif']shaft power. This in turn drives an alternator to produce green electricity. The electricity can be generated on site and sold to factories which are hungry for electricity, or sold to the state via the national grid. There are many successful Dendro plants currently operational in Sri Lanka. Here are few links:

<Sorry i'm not allowed to post links until i've made 15 posts. please google for more info>

I think I have sufficient technical and marketing background to enter this business. Although I’m not an expert in design and implementation of power plants, I think my knowledge as a computer and Electronics Engineer coupled with experience gained by working as a Marketing Researcher should suffice to get to the idea off the ground. I have good circle of Structural, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers with the right skills and attitude who are willing to team up or provide advice, but what I need is a business partner who can invest in this idea. I have around $ 20,000 in my piggy bank...yes i know that's not a lot :( . A conservative estimate of the project is around 350,000 and the partner(s) will have to fill the deficit. Interested investors are invited to discuss further details about the formation of a company and terms and conditions for partners.

Others are welcome to add their comments and suggestions.

Cheers!

It would only be green if the plant used sustainable locally produced wood or wood waste. How much land would be needed to grow the wood to keep your plant running? There are obviously major issues with deforestation in asia so as long as woodland management is part of youe plans then good luck with the project!

Thanks Jheath,

Approximately 1000 acres of land will be required to grow the timber required to produce one Megawatt of power. But a 1 MW plant is too ambitious at this point.

Some parts of the country has vast barren land and the locals can use it to cultivate plants like grillicedia which could be processed and sold to supplement their income. Currently Grillicedia wood is processed and sold at 25 US Cents per KG.
