Brexit, make-up and trash trucks: UKBF's year in posts

    Since starting on UK Business Forums earlier this year, I’ve been constantly impressed by the diversity of topics the forum sees every day. Curious about how to market a wedding shop, find a business partner or track down a mysterious Boeing full of gold bars? UK Business Forums is for you.

    In a hurricane twelve months that threw up dubious politics and the term ‘post-truth’, the UK Business Forums community have always been a bracing source of fresh air. Amidst website analyses – don’t use Wix, apparently - and Brexit debates, we were also lucky enough to have some of our most respected members and success stories contribute pieces to our content segment.

    To celebrate the end of 2016 – and what an incomprehensible year it’s been – here are some of the highlights.

    1. Is old marketing dead?

    Sparking a debate that spanned February to December, OllieSmith queries if ‘old’ marketing methods – telemarketing and leafleting – can be considered obsolete to small businesses in 2016. Though there’s some contention around the continued worth of carrier pigeons, Watson91 puts it best:

    “You can rest assured that if there's some remote chance of making money from it, somebody is doing it.”

    2. Pure hustle: From a beat-up transit and £160 to a million-pound business

    When our deputy editor interviewed Harsha Rathnayake, it fast became one of our most popular features of the year. The owner of London Junk, who worked three jobs to fund his company’s startup, says:

    “It was hard, but when you’re working towards a goal and you can see you’re getting there – then you find the courage to do it.”

    3. It’s not over yet: EU

    In a thread two days after the referendum, the mood was one of bewilderment. Some remained optimistic about a second referendum, whereas others thought this would only lead to riots. David Cameron had just resigned, with many assuming Corbyn would be next, and there was a widespread assumption that other countries would follow suit in questioning their own EU membership.

    The thread racked up 473 replies and over 10,000 views in the following months, making it one of our most dominant conversations in 2016.

    4. If it wasn’t for UK Business Forums, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.

    “I’d happened upon a community of people, some like-minded, that I could have an often fun and often mutually-beneficial conversation with.”

    Mark is one of UK Business Forums’ proudest success stories: 10 years on from his first ever post on the forums, he’s a well-known investor and the multi-millionaire founder of MyVoucherCodes. In this feature from the start of the year, he discusses the changing face of entrepreneurialism and why online communities beat expensive consultants.

    5. Cold calling questions

    Messiah’s thread on how to approach cold calls has enjoyed a near-constant popularity since its creation in July. The reason? As Ashley_Price puts it, “I am not an introvert, but I do hate telephone cold calling”.

    Full of sound advice on how to build customer relationships or even just find the courage to pick up the phone in the first place, this makes a great first port of call for anyone delivering a first-time pitch.

    6. Is it possible to buy a one man band business?

    Clinton is one of our most reliable voices on UK Business Forums. As founder of The Exit Firm, he’s helped hundreds of business owners sell their businesses; on the forums, he continues to provide invaluable advice on business valuation.   

    His feature explains why “buying the type of business that most others don’t want” can be a sound investment – and trust me, he’s convincing.

    7. How to compete with rogues?

    In one of my favourite threads of the year, Mark T Jones queries users’ methods for dealing with the “standard crookery” experienced within their industries.

    It’s an issue that’s undoubtedly frustrating for all legitimate businesses, but, as David WH says, "We compete by not being the cheapest and not the most expensive, but by being organised and doing what we say we will".

    8. How I launched a makeup startup at 65 that’s reached 1.5m in revenue

    Tricia Cudsen, like Harsha Rathnayake, is one of those entrepreneurs whose startup story is incredibly humanising. Fed up with the beauty industry’s anti-aging rhetoric, she launched her own cosmetics business in October 2013. She acknowledges,

    “As a 65-year-old pensioner, it was very important that I didn't do anything too reckless because it was unlikely that I would have enough time to recoup any losses.”

    9. The anatomy of a typical UKBF thread

    Last but not least, Scott runs down the structure of your average UK Business Forums conversation in one of the most amusing threads of the year. There are some spot-on observations and an intriguing reflection on crowdfunding turnip growth.
